Expedition: Badlands

In the Summer of 2015 I set out across Southwest Alberta on a 7-day expedition across the Canadian Badlands. This is Indiana Jones X Dr. Alan Grant.

This expedition opened my eyes to the rich historic culture of Alberta. I also learned that my home province of Alberta was built from one thing: Grit.

Thanks to my expedition partners Chinook Country Tourist Association.

S14 Expedition – Alberta, Canada

On August 4, 2014 I embarked on my first expedition, which was positioned to be around 7 days. People always ask how I began going on expeditions so I wanted to write about my first one. Turns out the S14 Expedition lasted around 20 days… This is the story of how it all happened.

_

I was on Twitter one day and for the hell of it I tweeted @LincolnMotorCo and said “I want to go on a 7-day expedition across Alberta in one of your vehicles and document the journey across Instagram. Who can I talk to?” It was all super random and I just had the idea and acted on it. Turns out, a couple days later I woke up to an email from Ford Canada saying they wanted to partner on my expedition and collaborate. I then talked with Travel Alberta and they offered expedition support. Once I began aligning the expedition branding and started broadcasting that this was happening things started to move very quickly and I had a flood of emails from various adventure companies and ski resorts across Alberta. The entire thing was put together in a couple weeks and the backbone of the expedition was trying new things in the outdoors.

I mentioned that the root of this expedition was trying new things in the outdoors. Here are the adventure activities that were new to me:

Huge thank you to all the support from Discover Banff Tours, local tourism and adventure companies, and to Ford Canada and Travel Alberta for making this happen.

Expedition Announcement

Introducing Expedition: Columbia Valley

December, 2015

_

WHOA – this week was a crazy one! I’ve been in Calgary a lot lately (my home town) finalizing current projects before most of my clients are on Christmas holidays. “I need to get back in the mountains ASAP” is something I have said to myself like twelve times a day for the last couple weeks. Then it happened – I got connected to the people at Copper Point Resort. Copper Point Resort is Invermere’s newest upscale hotel.

This expedition is different because I’m not used to upscale hotels – most of the time I am renegade camping and living totally fringe, with an array of trail mix and whatever sandwich I picked up from the last gas station or general store.

But the resort isn’t just a resort, they are the perfect complement to four-season fun, and the fun is weaved into the expedition beginning Wednesday, December 16th. After meeting with the communications team from Copper Point, they are much like a destination marketing organization for the area and are extremely passionate about the Columbia Valley and what it has to offer to families, explorers, people looking to disconnect and people looking for adventure.

The other really cool thing about this expedition is that we are teaming up with The Weather Network. I will be joined by Deb Matejicka and Krissy Vann from The Weather Network for a portion of the expedition and we will be doing various outdoor activities like paragliding (badass), ice fishing filming, fat biking in snow, snowboarding at Panorama Mountain Resort, cross-country skiing, touring through a mine in the Purcell Mountains and then soaking at Radium Hot Springs. I also hope to do some snowshoeing and alpine climbing while in the area. The rad thing is that I have never paraglided, cross-country skied, or tried ice-fishing. The winter conditions might prove to be my toughest challenge to date, as my other expeditions thus far have been in Spring/Summer. Either way, you have no idea how excited I am!

The Universe has a funny (and awesome) way of making sure things fall into place – I am excited and honored to partner with Copper Point and The Weather Network and hope to live in true Canadian hospitality on this expedition. I invite everyone to follow the expedition on my social media feeds listed below. I have also included Copper Point, Destination British Columbia and The Weather Network’s pages so you can follow along there as well.
